Brief Overview of Cigars

A cigar is a securely rolled package of dried and fermented tobacco, one end which can be lit in order for the smoker to inhale smoke into their mouth or lungs. Cigar tobacco is grown in large amounts in countries such as Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, and the USA. Cigars that are made in Cuba are often considered to be the best quality cigar due to the unique tobacco that is only grown in these parts as well as the excellent cigar manufacturers there. Cigars have been smoke by natives of the Caribbean Sea since 900AD.

Christopher Columbus is usually recognized for the person who introduced smoking to Europe after discovering an island of people who smoked cigars.

In the 19th century, smoking cigars was very popular, while cigarettes were very rare. The economy relied heavily on the production and sales of cigar products. The cigar also has a notable part in political history when President JFK put a trade block on US/Cuban trade to try to restrict Fidel Castro's power.

The united states was now forbidden to purchase the finest cigars in the world, which hurt the Cuban economy and also encouraged illegal trafficking of cigars. Today, it is still illegal for Americans to purchase Cuban Cigars, which has resulted in a large inflation in price, as well as many counterfeits being made. The creation of the internet has increased the ability for Americans to purchase cigars online. Enthusiastic cigar smokers consider cigar tasting as some would wine or scotch tasting. Many keep journals and personal records of cigars they have smoke for future reference.

Poker and Cigars - Together Forever?

At one time those who sat at a poker table considered cigars and poker as part of the same package. They freely puffed on their cigars as they rolled their hands over their piles of poker chips. Men skilled at the game of Texas Hold'em were usually equally skilled at the art of lighting and maintaining a smoking cigar. The cigar enthusiasts at BuyDominicanCigars.com mourn the day in age when this scene was easy to find. Many of us think this pastime may become a thing of the past unless the current trend is reversed.

At the dawn of the last century, and for a period that lasted until well into that century, all manner of gambling establishments were populated by cigar smokers. Blackjack tables, as well as poker tables had rings of cigar smoke floating above them.

A host at a poker game or at a game of blackjack might be called on to provide an implement for the cutting of one or more cigars. Such hosts needed to furnish guests with more than poker chips and a pack of cards. They also had to provide their guests with plenty of cigar ashtrays. Preparations for a long poker or blackjack game demanded more than just the accumulation of drink and snack foods. Such preparations also included the purchase of extra butane lighters.

Now however at the start of the 21st century things have changed. Now the city and state rules and regulations have called for a ban on the use of cigars at a game of Texas Hold'em. In fact, if one now walks into a gambling casino one cannot find a single soul puffing on a cigar. There may be cigar smokers at such establishments, but they no longer feel free to smoke while they play poker. A visit to Hollywood Park in Inglewood, CA uncovers the confined area into which the cigar and cigarette smokers have been moved. It is a small room in the corner of a larger room. It usually contains several small chairs and one large chair. That large chair has the ability to provide someone with a message.

Customers just slip a quarter into the arm of the chair and then sit back for five minutes. Then the frustrations that those same customers might have felt at not being able to smoke a cigar while playing poker are apt to disappear. And of course one is free to smoke a cigar or a cigarette is this same room. Because the smokers are unable to busy themselves with the playing of poker or blackjack, these rooms frequently have on the walls some interesting posters. Since Inglewood is located close to the Filmmaking capital of the world, most of the posters focus on early Hollywood and the early entertainers.

Even if one has no interest in smoking a cigar, and even if one has no desire to get a message, still it is fun to examine those posters. A close examination might allow one to find the picture of Kirk Douglas when he was just a young man. One could look at that picture and appreciate why he became such a star. One might also wonder what he would say now regarding the current rules, rules that prohibit the once accepted combination of cigars and poker.

The History of Davidoff Cigars

Davidoff is a byword for quality and style throughout the world. It encompasses men's fragrances, ties, glasses, congac, humidors, and briefcases, but it is based upon cigars. To build a multi-million dollar business in the 20th century on a tobacco product is a truly remarkable achievement. Inspired by Zino Davidoff this companies products have become a must have for affluent men around the world.

The life story of Zino Davidoff reads like a history of the Twentieth Century. Zino was born in Kiev in 1906, his family fled the pogroms to settle in Geneva and opened a tobacco shop where Lenin was a customer. Zino traveled to the tobacco lands of Central and South America at a young age, eventually ending up in Cuba, for which he grew a life long affection. By 1947 he had created his Chateau Selection based on Cuban Hoyo de Montgomery cabinets. In 1969 Zino Davidoff was granted the accolade from the Cuban industry of Havana brand.

In 1970, Ernst Schneider, a Swiss importer, became interested in Davidoff's brand. Seeing the potential the brand had Schneider, with the help of Cubatabaco's help, developed the brand into a worldwide success. There were three series of Davidoff Havanas, all with a distinctive flavor all to their own, the fullest being the Chateau, the lightest being the Dom Perignon No. 1, No. 2, and the Ambassadrice. They also offered a medium tasting cigar, the Thousand Series.

It is truly a shame that these cigars are no longer available. Because of a dispute between Cubatobaco and Oettinger the production of Davidoffs in Havana ceased in March of 1990 and the brand moved it's operation to the Dominican Republic.

Rather than try to recreate the flavorsof their former cigars they instead set out to raise the bar when it came to what people expect of a Dominican Cigar.

Domincan Davidoffs, dressed in their own claro Conneticut wrappers, are immaculately tailored. Replacing the Chateau range is the "Grand Cru" range by offering a the richest flavor of all Davidoff cigars. The No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and the Ambassadriceare as delicately mild as you can get, and the Thousand Series ("Mille") have a mild flavor, though not as mild as the others. There are also the Davidoff Special Selection of heavy girth cigars, including the Davidoff Special R (Robusto), the Davidoff Special T (Piramides), and the Davidoff Double R (Double Carona).

A Short History of Cigars and Tobacco

Have you ever wondered where cigars were first produced? It is widely believed that cigars were first produced in Spain. But before cigars became all the rage in Europe, tobacco was needed to make them. Tobacco is indigenous to the Americas, where native peoples have produced it for hundreds of years. It is believed that the Maya of Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and parts of Central America cultivated tobacco, and even smoked it! Tobacco use spread to other tribes Thank You For Smoking, both north and south. It is believed that its first use in the United States was probably among the tribe along the Mississippi. The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Cigars
This study covers the world outlook for cigars across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
